Wayne Powell Releases Television Spot to Air During Republican National Convention
Campaign Calls Romney “Smart” for Keeping Cantor off Podium
Richmond, VA - August 27, 2012 - The Powell for Congress campaign today announced an ad campaign
targeting 7th District viewers of the Republican National Convention. The ad will run district-wide
approximately once an hour on Fox News for the entire Convention. The ad buy is indicative of Powell’s
strategy of reaching out to all voters regardless of their political affiliation.
“I can’t find anybody who’s not upset with the do-nothing Congress,” said Powell, Democratic candidate and
opponent of Majority Leader Eric Cantor. “It hasn’t mattered if they’re party-affiliated or independent. I have
yet to knock on a single door where the person answering is happy with what’s going on in the Cantor-run
Congress.”
An August 14 Gallup Poll showed that only one in ten Americans gave Congress a positive approval
rating. “I’m like Tom Coburn, the Republican U.S. Senator from Oklahoma,” said Powell. “If there is anyone
who approves of the job Congress is doing, I can’t find them.”
The 7th District Congressional race was once considered unwinnable against Cantor. However, a July Hickman
Analytics poll showed Cantor’s approval rating in the district at 37% with 41% of the voters saying he should
be re-elected, and 43% saying he needs to be replaced. A PPP poll done August 23 shows Cantor’s statewide
approval rating at 27%.
“Without question, Cantor’s abysmal approval rating is the reason Republicans aren’t letting him address
the convention,” said Dave “Mudcat” Saunders, Powell’s strategist. “Since Romney is smart enough to not
let Cantor anywhere near the podium, Wayne is excited to address 7th District Republican and Independent
viewers of the Convention, and there’s no better place to reach them than Fox News.”
